An SDP3 Year in Review
SDP3 (also known as Self-Discovery: Pain, Positioning & Purpose, Inc) is a 501c3 non-profit organization with the eradication of suicide at the forefront of its mission. As such, we have embarked on numerous journeys, hosted many events, participated in several initiatives, and partnered with numerous organizations throughout the year to achieve this goal.
We have experienced tremendous progress on our journey and humbly take the time to reflect on our accomplishments, significant moments, and partnerships formed throughout the year 2020.

Series 5
We start with the successful publication of our Series 5 Anthology, “The Life of a Veteran”. This edition focussed on the Mental Health experiences of our brothers and sisters who’ve served in the armed forces. Their contributions to this anthology allowed us to see mental health from a unique perspective, as our brothers and sisters shared their experiences and how it impacted their lives, families, and service. This Anthology is dedicated to the CEO’s brother, The Late SFC Randolph Davison, Jr., U.S. Army Decorated Veteran who is featured on the cover.

On January 26, 2020, SDP3 visited the Rhema Christian Fellowship in Athens, Georgia, for “Taking Off The Mask: Suicide Prevention”. The event was hosted by Pastor O’Marr S. Curry (Senior Pastor) & Lady Jasmine Curry. Our founder Venessa D. Abram, MBA, CPS, was the guest speaker and leader of a Question-and-Answer Segment that led a discussion on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention and shared her own experiences to enlighten those in attendance. The event produced a healthy turnout of 125 people who were engaged, interactive, and participated vigorously in the event’s discussions.

There is No Health Without Mental Health Anthology

Series 1
On January 13, 2020, SDP3 invited interested and prospective authors to participate in Volume 2, Series 1 of our Anthology series. The edition welcomed numerous entries allowing different individuals with various experiences to speak out about their experiences with Mental Health, Suicide, and the stigma associated with it. The contributions were eye-opening, not unlike the previous edition that gave us insight into a different perspective on Suicide and Mental Health.

Spiritual & Mental Health: It’s a Balancing Act!
Mental Health, Bullying, Suicide Prevention, Depression, Anxiety, and Coping Skills were some of the topics discussed at the revolutionary event hosted by Miracle House Church in Bogart, Georgia on March 7, 2020. Senior Pastor Daisy R. Hall was delighted to host our Founder and Guest Facilitator at the event, Venessa D. Abram, who shared her experiences and expertise on the topics discussed. 55 people in attendance benefited tremendously from the sharing of information and the interactive and engaging nature of the discussions.

Prayer Call
On April 2, 2020, SDP3 announced its monthly Prayer Call to take place on the 1st Sunday of every month. Hosted by our very own Venessa D. Abram and Special Guest Speaker Tavis Taylor, the event allowed attendees to share their desires, their struggles, and their thoughts in an environment of understanding, love, and compassion where they could receive, you guessed it, prayer.
The event was hosted online, where attendees could use the access code and tune in and participate from anywhere in the world. This initiative yielded powerful sessions and positively impacted the lives of those who tuned in to connect and share with others in need of intercession.

COVID-19 Resiliency Coping Skills

COVID-19 could not stop us!
To assist in beating COVID-19 and staying on top of our lives, SDP3 hosted a series of virtual community forums from April 10 – 30, 2020, featuring various speakers sharing their perspectives and helpful tips on remaining motivated, determined, and resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic. Featuring different speakers on each day such as Transformational Author & Speaker, Jason Holzer; Author & Speaker, Tavis Taylor; Anne Rulo & Wendy Farmer, these forums each had a unique message to walk away with and provided our 17,000+ followers across our social media platforms with the information they could apply to their lives to stay on top of the pandemic.

Speaker Series with BGCMA
Children are our future, and nurturing them was the goal of SDP3 on May 1, 2020, as we were hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta Teen Services for their Speaker Series with BGCMA. On this virtual meeting, our Founder and Featured Speaker at the event, Venessa D. Abram, had a stimulating discussion with our teens, sharing her experiences, expertise, and advice on navigating suicide and bullying, and other issues our children face today.

Featuring appearances from Brain Health Advocate and Storyteller, Kevin Hines; VP of Behavioural Health Charlotte, Victor Armstrong and Author and Speaker, Brandi Benson, this forum proved to be a profound and impactful edition in the fight against COVID-19.

Featuring words and testimonies from some of the most influential voices in the industry, the I Am Resilient Summit, hosted by Tavis Taylor, proved to be one of the most powerful events of the year. With various voices and a variety of testimonials, this 5-hour event left 300 attendees with a lifetime of value and an unforgettable experience.

The Remix – Taking Off The Mask
COVID-19 Mental Wellness Tour
In what is the biggest annual event in SDP3’s calendar, this year’s Mental Health Tour adopted the theme. “The Remix – Taking Off the Mask: COVID-19 Mental Wellness Tour.” SDP3’s Mental Health Tour is a staple of our organization and has adopted many themes since its conception. The tour usually takes the organization across several states in the United States and has even spread internationally to the Caribbean. This year, the mission was the same, but the battlefield was wider as our tour took a virtual turn, allowing individuals across the world to access and partake in the tour’s activities and discussions. We were able to impact a span of 10,000 people.

Where there is faith, there is power, and this event was not short of it. Our Facebook Live event, “Mental Health & Wellness in the Face of a Pandemic,” held on July 8 -29, 2020, was a resounding success. Impacting over 17,000 plus followers across our social medial platforms tuning in, Jamaican personalities such as Donovan Thomas, JP, and Faith Thomas ignited our live stream while personalities such as Dr. Deb Green, Monique “Mo” Bell, and Teresa Hawley-Howard carried the torch on the following days.

It’s time to hear from the MEN
The Virtual Launch of Volume 2 Series 3 There is no Health without Mental Health Anthology entitled, “Men & Mental Health” took place on July 24, 2020. This was a special edition in the anthology series where solely men were featured and their insights into mental health were published. This edition, albeit strictly male, gave some interesting and varied insights into mental health and wellness from men with varying experiences and areas of expertise.

Covering topics such as religion, rape, fatherlessness, relationships, and more, this event proved to be a hard-hitting experience leaving no stones unturned and no areas unexplored.

Racism has been rampant in the United States for decades. However, most aren’t aware of its connection to suicide. On July 30, 2020, a discussion hosted by Dr. Sally Spencer explored this topic with the help of an extensive and industry-recognized roster of panelists. Utilizing a pool of expert opinions and experience-based accounts, the discussion was rich, informative, and enlightening for 17,000 plus followers across our social medial platforms.

Following the response to and impact of the Volume 2 Series 3 anthology entry entitled, “Men & Mental Health”, a follow-up was DEMANDED in the form of a Zoom-facilitated online panel discussion on Men & Mental Health. This panel discussion delved into the contents of the anthology featuring some of the very same contributors in an interactive and riveting discussion-format. Working Together to Prevent Suicide
Though not directly involved, this day meant a lot to the SDP3 Family. On September 10, 2020, the 12th Annual World Suicide Prevention Day Seminar (Virtual) was held from 12 pm – 4 pm.
Through an online application, this event brought together individuals from Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Pakistan, and Zambia who shared their knowledge and expertise in a discussion format, covering numerous topics on Suicide and its prevention.
The event was a resounding success, with over 17,000 followers across our social media platforms in attendance and exuberance for next year’s event.

Self Discovery After Domestic Violence
Women are POWERFUL…and that was evidenced in this SDP3 virtual conference.
Responsible for forming what will soon be known as lifelong partnerships, the Self Discovery After Domestic Violence Virtual Conference brought together some of the most impactful women in their respective fields to share their knowledge, experience, and expertise on Domestic Violence.
A safe space was created for all in attendance to share their experiences and receive advice and insights on how to rebuild, move forward, cope, and liberate themselves from the lasting impact of violence.

The Way Forward
2020 has been an incredible year in the life of the SDP3 Family.
We have experienced setbacks, delays, roadblocks, and speedbumps. But at the end of the day, we have also experienced growth, embarked on new experiences, and forged strong relationships along the way.
2020 has taught us that what is destined for us is indeed for us and that we can achieve our goals with perseverance, faith, and resilience.
On that note, we look forward to the year 2021 as the year following a major milestone year for our family and are excited for all it has to offer.
